The feria and the arena
Every August, the Féria of Béziers turns the city into a great open-air theatre for five days. The arena, inspired by its Spanish cousins, hosts shows and bullfights, but it is above all in the streets that the party unfolds: bodegas, concerts, neighbourhood meals. A fine chance to meet in the crowd and then slip away for a quieter moment just for two.
Languedoc wines
Around Béziers, the vineyard slopes stretch as far as the eye can see. The Faugères and Saint-Chinian AOCs, to the north, produce reds of real character; closer by, the Coteaux du Languedoc includes many fine cuvées. Pushing open the door of a wine estate, listening to the grower and leaving with two bottles makes for a date with real flavour. The talkative will carry on the evening on a terrace.
Markets and local dishes
The halls and the flower market along the Paul-Riquet Avenues delight food lovers: tielles from nearby Sète, sweet-and-savoury Béziers little pies, olives and country cheeses. In the kitchen, bourride of monkfish and cassoulet sit beside Mediterranean dishes. On Lyad, Béziers members share their favourite addresses; it is up to you to find someone to raise a glass with.
